The narthex has been deconstructed! The library walls have come down, and carpet has been removed from the sanctuary to the restrooms in the educational wing. Additionally, the ceiling asbestos has been remediated in this area. The narthex and hallway are taped off for the time being.
Three sectional stories of the stained glass windows by renowned artist Gabriel Loire have been removed and temporarily stored. This will protect them from any possible damage during construction of the choir loft elevator and vestibule entry. They will be reinstalled during renovation of the sanctuary.
Work continues in Acker Hall. A construction trailer has been established in the southeast parking lot.
Progress is being made on demolition and preparation for construction in Acker Hall and the lower level.
There was once a wall built to block the stairs to the “hallway” behind the stage. That area had become a storage area. Now the wall has been removed.
Temporary framing and construction doors have been installed to secure the work areas throughout the lower level and at stairwells. Access to the upper level is still available through the main level.
The back hallway from the Elevette to the sanctuary wing (and lower level restrooms) has been cleared of these items. A construction door has also been installed between this point and the restrooms.
The coatroom near the sanctuary has been cleared of most items.
Additionally, many old pews and excess items were donated to Orphan Grain Train last week. The library is completely emptied, except for the lamp and clock. Congregant mailboxes have been moved to Room 115 between the office and the main floor restrooms.
Scheduled soon is full demolition of the stage! This will include destruction of the concrete slab underneath it, and the ramp to Acker Hall. This will be loud and difficult work.
Beginning July 27, there will be no entrance from the west parking area to the building, except by walking around to the east door.
Asbestos abatement in Acker Hall is complete. Old lighting and fans were removed when ceiling tiles were removed. The carpet, floor tiles and adhesive were removed in Acker, the hallway to the back stairwell, the stage and storage room.
The stage and storage room have been emptied and are ready for demolition. New accessible restrooms will be built in their place, making for seamless use for all members and guests.
Acker Hall serves as the “fellowship hall” for Pacific Hills. Flooring and ceiling upgrades are planned. The ramp from the existing Elevette will be demolished, as the new replacement elevator will open at floor level.
Accessibility
To provide our members and visitors opportunities to participate in all that Pacific Hills has to offer, access to all floors in the education wing is being addressed. The existing lift will be replaced by a full-size elevator to all levels.
Same-level access will flow directly into Acker Hall, eliminating the ramp. Upper floor opportunities will broaden for those who need an elevator. An additional elevator will be installed near the main entrance, to provide access to the choir loft and main level near the Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary
A light makeover will also include lighting, sound and flooring, as well as more wheelchair accessible seating.
Comfort upgrades will provide for the needs of families and visitors without impeding our traditional worship.
The stained glass windows by renowned artist Gabriel Loire, the stained glass Reredos, and cross configuration will remain.
The Narthex
The main gathering area will be enlarged, providing a wide, welcoming area to greet and mingle. More natural light and improved traffic flow through the main level will result.
Acker Hall
Our main fellowship area will see the addition of accessible restrooms in place of the existing stage. But it will also receive cosmetic upgrades, enhancing fellowship, Bible study and presentation experiences.
The Offices
The entry to the offices will switch to the narthex, off the main entrance, allowing better visitor access. Reconfiguration of rooms, relocation of technology, and new work space will enhance efficiency.
The Library
Historical books from the former library will be moved to Room 115. This multi-function space will continue to provide meeting and gathering space. An accessible family restroom across from Room 115 will accommodate needs on the main level.
Additionally, mechanical and practical issues will be taken care of during the renovation. This includes the heating/air conditioning system, security, and other unseen items. Congregant mailboxes will be relocated, and a dedicated server room will be created.
We’re updating our facility to better accomplish our mission:
Share Christ t Serve Others
Beginning in the summer of 2020, the project includes refreshing our worship space, expanding meeting and visitor areas, and providing better accessibility throughout the buildings.
These projects will allow us to provide an efficient facility for guests and members, and to continue to welcome more brothers and sisters into the church.
Built in the 1960s, the Pacific Hills sanctuary and main building have seen minor renovations over the years. The incredible pipe organ underwent an update and repairs in 2019. The Reredos was installed in 2004. The other stained glass windows in the sanctuary were commissioned to renowned artist Gabriel Loire in 1968.
The educational wing was built in 1961. This building holds our offices, classrooms, and Acker Hall, our fellowship area. It is also home to Lamb of God Preschool (the preschool will not be renovated).
Funding for the renovations comes primarily from the "Building Together...Forward in Faith" campaign, and bequeaths to the congregation. The "Forward in Faith" fundraising effort with the LCMS Nebraska District allows our members to participate in fundraising for District projects, while providing guidance in this effort. The Building Together campaign helped to renovate the District offices and the University Lutheran Chapel in Lincoln.
