Our Visit with Pastor JP Cima

Pastor Cima And Family

Pacific Hills Lutheran Church thanks Pastor JP Cima for sharing with us his mission in Cambodia.  We celebrated with an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, July 17th.  PHLC has helped Pastor Cima and his family with Mission dollars, while they are serving in Southeast Asia, where they have been for 12 years.  Pastor Cima travels throughout Cambodia to equip and empower the leaders of the Cambodia Lutheran Church with mentorship and formal theological education, that they might boldly announce and demonstrate the Gospel to the people of Cambodia.  Pastor Cima's wife, Aimee, serves as the Mercy Manager for the Asia region.  You can learn more about Pastor JP Cima's mission work at these websites

Fruitful Summer

A small active of kindness can go a long way to make someone’s day.   Those smiles belong to Pacific Hills Lutheran Church members who participated in some recent acts of kindness.

Smiles at the Laundromat

Members offered to pay for loads of washers and dryers  at a local laundromat and were met with appreciation.  Why did we do this?  Because Jesus loves you and so do the members of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church.

Drinks for Travelers

Church members handed out refreshing water and Cokes for travelers on their way home from work.   In all they handed out 115 bottles of Coke/Diet Coke and about 180 bottles of water Tuesday afternoon, August 13th, at the intersection in front of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church (90th & Pacific).  Commuters appreciated the act of kindness.

In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”  One fruit that Paul mentions specifically is – kindness. There are many ways one can express kindness, but essentially kindness is love in action.

The Intersection of Church and State

Church & State

This week we celebrated our nation's independence and the birth of our nation's freedom. I hope that you had some time to relax and be with family and thank God for the men and women who have given their lives that we might breathe free. Last week in this article I spoke to you about a resource from Lutheran Hour Ministries entitled: “The Intersection of Church & State.”

The Intersection of Church & StateTo be sure in the United States the relationship between church and state is an energetic one. Voices and viewpoints line up across the spectrum. Some would argue there should be a "wall of separation" between the two. Others maintain co-existence is not only necessary and inevitable, but can lead to positive results. This Coming Sunday, July 7th, during Adult Bible Class (9:15am – Acker Hall – Earlier Time), we are going to take a look at “The Intersection of Church and State.” This DVD resource features former Lutheran Hour Speaker, Rev. Gregory Seltz.

Food to the Community

Free lunch to the community

Pacific Hills provided free lunches to the community on a steamy Saturday, June 29th. Volunteers cooked and served hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and cold water to anyone who stopped by. We enjoyed meeting neighbors, passers-by, and friends at this annual event.

Why did we do this?  Because Jesus loves you and we do too!

Celebrate the Birth of our Nation

US Flag flying over Pearl Harbor

Something to think about as we prepare to Celebrate the Birth of our Nation

In the United States the relationship between church and state is an energetic one. Voices and viewpoints line up across the spectrum.  Some would argue there should be a "wall of separation" between the two. Others maintain co-existence is not only necessary and inevitable, but can lead to positive results.  Next Sunday, July 7, during Adult Bible Class (9:15 AM – Acker Hall – Earlier Time), we are going to take a look at a DVD resource by former Lutheran Hour Speaker, Rev. Gregory Seltz  and Lutheran Hour Ministries entitled:  “Intersection of Church & State.”

Throughout this study, tough questions are raised that help the Christian understand the demanding balance between Church and State.  Politics and religion often separate people in sharp and defining ways, dividing a country along shifting lines.  Yet, no matter one's perspective, for the Christian his or her citizenship is an opportunity to serve in both the affairs of earthly government and the mission of the Christian Church on earth, always remembering; however, that the latter is most important and our number one priority.

Thank You Rev Bill Steinbauer

Rev Bill Steinbauer from University Lutheran Chapel

We thank Rev. Bill Steinbauer for his visit to Pacific Hills Lutheran Church Sunday, June 23, 2019. Pastor Steinbauer shared information on the progress of improvements to University Lutheran Chapel in Lincoln, Nebraska.  PHLC contributed $200,000 to the renovations to the University Lutheran Chapel.   Located on the edge of UNL's campus, the chapel has a vital role connecting students to Jesus.  This renovation will change the whole look and function of the chapel.  Instead of a fortress, the street view will be friendly and inviting to those walking by, making it much easier for new students on Sunday morning.

Rev. Steinbauer's sermon from Sunday, June 23, 2019 can be heard from the link below:

Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday

Trinity Scutum Fidei EnglishOn Trinity Sunday we confess what is known as the Athanasian Creed. We proclaim the mystery of our faith in our God who is Triune: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One-in-Three and Three-in-One. Unlike other festivals in the church’s liturgical calendar, Trinity Sunday centers on a doctrine of the church, rather than an event. It celebrates the unfathomable mystery of God’s being as Holy Trinity. It is a day of adoration and praise of the one, eternal, incomprehensible God.

The Transfiguration

The Transfiguration by Raphael

A

bout eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
