September 29 is the date on the church’s calendar where it celebrates the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. This year, September 29 happens to fall on a Sunday, so we will join in that celebration next Sunday. Michael is one of the archangels, along with Gabriel and Raphael, that are referenced each week in our liturgy as we sing with “angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven.” St. Michael is referenced first in the book of Daniel as being in battle against Satan and the fallen angels, thus protecting God’s people. As we will sing next week in “Christ, the Lord of Hosts, Unshaken” (LSB 521):
“Michael fought the heavenly battle,
Godly angels by his side;
Warred against the ancient serpent,
Foiled the beast, so full of pride,
Cast him earth-bound with his angels;
Now he prowls, unsatisfied.
Thank you to all who were able to attend the August 18 Cookout and Courtyard Jazz concert. August's performance was the Michael Lyon Quartet.
The general community and Pacific Hills were blessed with beautiful evening weather and good fellowship. PHLC is happy to have sponsored this venue for three concerts this year, thanks to donors, members and friends.

Rally Day at Pacific Hills signals to us that the summer has ended and the fall program is underway.
Sunday school classes will begin their new program on September 8.
All Sunday school teachers, and adult Bible Class facilitators, will be installed at the 10:30 am service and, as in the past, there will be a pot- luck breakfast between the services which the congregation is encouraged to attend. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex to sign-up to bring a potluck breakfast item to share, or you may send Sandra Glissmann an email and inform her what you would like to bring.
Thank you Rev. John Welge for visiting us Sunday, August 18, 2019. Rev. John Welge spoke at both services about a ministry providing direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Pastor Welge shared personal witness about Food For The Poor’s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another.
Pastor Welge was born and raised in Illinois and served as a LCMS pastor for almost 43 years. He graduated from Concordia Senior College in I968 with a BA in Music and later in 1972 earned an M.Div. degree from Concordia Seminary in Illinois. He is married to Susan with two married children. He has led and participated in many mission trips within Central America. Now that he is retired, he speaks on behalf of the poor through Food For The Poor.
Pacific Hills Lutheran Church Foundation will host a “Legacy” lunch-and-learn event on Sunday, October 20, 2019. This session and will present information on how to include the Foundation in your estate. The Foundation supports, among other things, Concordia Lutheran Schools of Omaha, and the people, ministries and missions you care about. Come and learn about the Foundation! Craig Stirtz from the LCMS Foundation will lead the session. The event will immediately follow the second service. Lunch will be provided. While your RSVP is not required, please consider signing up so there is a more accurate count for lunch. The sign-up sheet is posted in the narthex. For questions, contact Kevin Warneke at (402) 612-9151.
Pacific Hills Lutheran Church thanks Pastor JP Cima for sharing with us his mission in Cambodia. We celebrated with an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, July 17th. PHLC has helped Pastor Cima and his family with Mission dollars, while they are serving in Southeast Asia, where they have been for 12 years. Pastor Cima travels throughout Cambodia to equip and empower the leaders of the Cambodia Lutheran Church with mentorship and formal theological education, that they might boldly announce and demonstrate the Gospel to the people of Cambodia. Pastor Cima's wife, Aimee, serves as the Mercy Manager for the Asia region. You can learn more about Pastor JP Cima's mission work at these websites
A small active of kindness can go a long way to make someone’s day. Those smiles belong to Pacific Hills Lutheran Church members who participated in some recent acts of kindness.
Members offered to pay for loads of washers and dryers at a local laundromat and were met with appreciation. Why did we do this? Because Jesus loves you and so do the members of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church.
Church members handed out refreshing water and Cokes for travelers on their way home from work. In all they handed out 115 bottles of Coke/Diet Coke and about 180 bottles of water Tuesday afternoon, August 13th, at the intersection in front of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church (90th & Pacific). Commuters appreciated the act of kindness.
In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” One fruit that Paul mentions specifically is – kindness. There are many ways one can express kindness, but essentially kindness is love in action.
This past Sunday (07/14/2019) Pacific Hills Lutheran Church's courtyard was filled with the upbeat jazz of Robert Glaser & Urban Jazz. Pacific Hills and visitors were blessed with beautiful evening weather and good fellowship. Band members for this ensemble are:
For more information about Robert Glaser & Urban Jazz please visit the Robert Glaser website or Facebook page.
Even Pacific Hill's own Paul Shultz (trombone) joined the band for the last two songs.
Pacific Hills Lutheran Church is happy to sponsor this venue for three concerts this year. For about the last 20 years Pacific Hills has sponsored three summer evening jazz concerts on our courtyard. This year we are continuing to do the same as the series has been a wonderful outreach event into our community. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please contact the PHLC office.
This week we celebrated our nation's independence and the birth of our nation's freedom. I hope that you had some time to relax and be with family and thank God for the men and women who have given their lives that we might breathe free. Last week in this article I spoke to you about a resource from Lutheran Hour Ministries entitled: “The Intersection of Church & State.”
To be sure in the United States the relationship between church and state is an energetic one. Voices and viewpoints line up across the spectrum. Some would argue there should be a "wall of separation" between the two. Others maintain co-existence is not only necessary and inevitable, but can lead to positive results. This Coming Sunday, July 7th, during Adult Bible Class (9:15am – Acker Hall – Earlier Time), we are going to take a look at “The Intersection of Church and State.” This DVD resource features former Lutheran Hour Speaker, Rev. Gregory Seltz.
Pacific Hills provided free lunches to the community on a steamy Saturday, June 29th. Volunteers cooked and served hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and cold water to anyone who stopped by. We enjoyed meeting neighbors, passers-by, and friends at this annual event.
Why did we do this? Because Jesus loves you and we do too!
